Three Cheers for Under Armour and a 6-Mile-Run

So I have to admit it. I am known to be a bit of a brand loyalist. When I find something that I like, a brand that produces high quality products that last with great performance, I stick with it. Thanks to a trip to the Under Armour Outlet before Christmas, and the fact that the great majority of running attire sold at our local Dick's Sporting Goods Store is Under Armour, Under Armour has become my most recent obsession.

I picked up some running shorts, a tank top, and some compression shirts at the outlet on Black Friday, and have been pleased with the result. This weekend, I went to Dick's and bought some headbands; a mock neck, long sleeve, fitted performance shirt; and a super cute purple tee that was on sale.

I figure if I have cute, non-running workout type clothing, I might be more motivated to do better on my cross training days. And by do better, I mean do an actual cross training workout and not just do laundry, vacuuming or house cleaning and call it cross training. Hey, nobody is perfect!

I tried on the mock neck shirt yesterday and was very pleased with the purchase. The material was super soft and quite thick. It was well fitted, but not too tight. I am confident that it is an excellent addition to not only my running wardrobe, but to my outdoor wardrobe in general. I would wear this shirt skiing, ice skating or even to an outdoor sporting event in cold weather. I cannot wait to take it out for a run.

I also picked up some Reebok wicking socks with extra cushion this weekend. TMI ALERT: I have been running in my thin, every day socks, and have noticed my feet get really, very sweaty, and I have been having a lot of blisters, especially after the six mile long run this weekend. I am hoping that the thicker wicking socks will help make my feet more comfortable and prevent excessive blisters.

I realize that blisters are a reality of running, and I am actually proud of my blisters, but I do not want them to get so bad that it prevents me from continuing my training.

Speaking of the six mile run, here's how my splits went:

Mile Time Best Pace
1 10:28 8:10
2 10:27 9:25
3 10:14 9:12
4 10:35 8:41
5 10:13 9:11
6 9:37 8:19

I was letting hubby set the pace at the beginning of the run since it was our longest run to date. I left him behind at mile three, and turned around to catch up with him and ate a banana for fuel during mile four. Mile five was right on with race pace, and mile six I sprinted to the finish (and to the water in the car).

Overall, I was very happy with the six miles. I felt sufficiently hydrated and fueled, and ate back some of my calories afterward at Buffalo Wild Wing during the playoff games. It was a beautiful day for a run and I find myself enjoying the unseasonably warm weather this winter, although I usually prefer snow. I am hoping the weather is nice next weekend as well as I press on to seven miles. However, if it is colder, it would give me a great opportunity to take out my new mock neck Under Armour. Squee!

Have a great week everyone! Get out and run!

  1. I am a total Under Armour gear whore, I love UA! Plus something about it being a Baltimore company just adds a sense of pride when I wear it haha. Dick's had a lot of UA stuff on clearance, mainly summer stuff, but as you saw in my blog post I was about to get a lot of $30+ things for $16. Good job on the 6 miler - wasn't the weather fabulous? I was almost sad not to test out my UA Coldgear stuff!

Be Here

I read a book recently that reminded me if we are always waiting for the next good thing -- a "better" house, a "better" job, a "better" location, a "better" spouse, the next vacation, your child's next developmental milestone -- you are never fully in the moment and, therefore, you never fully appreciate what you have. We live in a society that teaches us that bigger is better, surplus is superior to enough, wants are more important than our needs, and the next step will make us happier than where we are. But what happens when you reach that next step? Is all that glitters gold? Does chasing happiness bring us joy? Or does reaching that next step leave us in search of the next best thing? The next hit? The next high? What would life look like, then, if we put our focus on where we are? If we chose joy in any and all circumstances? I'm not saying that we should not have goals to improve ourselves or that we do not deserve to be happy. W...

The Gift of Prayer

I believe that prayer is a powerful gift and tool. It is how we are in relationship with God. We have a direct line to the creator of the universe and an advocate on our behalf that sits at the right hand of the Father. We go to God in prayer to say thank you when things are good and to ask for healing when friends and family are sick, but do we go to him with our everyday hopes, struggles, or anxieties? There was an incident earlier today that troubled me for the better part of the day. I was sitting at the local coffee shop with a friend while Silas played nearby. A woman walked in with two little girls, one of Silas' age and the other about half his age. She came and set her stuff down at a chair at the table where we sat. Her older daughter immediately reached for a toy stethoscope Silas had been playing with. He grabbed onto it and said, "noooo" with a whimper and made eyes at me. I said something along the lines of, "I'm sorry, Silas was playing with that...

Heaven is Paradise

Judah and I managed to make it out to ladies bible study yesterday where we briefly discussed the idea of what heaven may be like. We ultimately decided that heaven will appear differently to each of us. While I know that Heaven is an unfathomable place, I find myself daydreaming (with a sleeping baby on my chest) about what Heaven will be like. The bible tells us there will be no pain, tears or heartache. Jesus is preparing "rooms" for us there where he will greet us and dwell with us. The streets are paved with gold, the gates are made of pearl, and the walls made of precious jewels. We will spend our days worshipping the glory of God. I like to think that Heaven is at the foot of a mountain. I'll greet, and in some instances meet loved ones for the first time, in a field where a river flows. The air is crisp and smells like new babies . There is no age in heaven -- we will all be recognizable and we will know one another fully, without the hindrance of sin, the wa...
