Chance's Anniversary

Part of being a fit for life wife is being a fit mom. Now, I may not have a baby with two legs, but I do have a baby with four legs, and he is just as special to me.

Welcome home, Chance!

We adopted Chance Nov. 19, 2010 from Second Hope Rescue. We had just lost our beloved cat, Cowboy, to feline leukemia, and I could not bare to have another cat replace him. Cowboy had such personality swagger. He was loving, thoughtful (he never pooped outside his litter box), comforting, and above all things, he was an excellent companion. I swear to you that this cat would talk to us... but that is another story. The point is, without Cowboy in our home, there was a void. A gaping, icy void.

That being said, my heart melted the moment Chance came into our home. He has a pizazz unlike any pooch I have ever met. His energy is phenomenal, albeit annoying at times like when I want to sleep in on Saturday, but oh no! Puppy wants to play! He is a proud dog. He prances like he is in a showplace arena when we walk him down the street, and struts when the lady pups are nearby. (Sorry ladies, his heart belongs to a Boston Terrier named Ava).

He is also a protective pup, which bodes well for me when hubby is away. The neighbors affectionately refer to him as killer. People unknown to us will cross to the other side of the street to avoid his bark, and comment "he is going to be vicious when he grows up." Little do they know...

The vet estimates that Chance was a healthy five-year-old pup when we first adopted him, making him nearing six now, and is full size at 14 pounds. But do not be fooled, he is 14 pounds of lean muscle mass. We never feed him table scraps and have him on a regulated diet.

We give him treats for good behavior fairly regularly, but I wanted something special to mark the anniversary of the day that our furbaby came to his forever home; so I decided to bake!

A fellow Nesty shared this recipe with me from her blog, Does Not Cook Well With Others. She has a few other dog recipes on there that I am eager to try in the future, but for now I stuck to what we know Chance loves: peanut butter and carrots.

Peanut Butter Delight
Ingredients:
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup shredded carrots
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/3 cup honey
1 egg

Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Spray an 8-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray, or line a cupcake pan with paper liners.
  3. Mix the flour and baking soda. Add the peanut butter, oil, carrots, vanilla, honey and egg; mix well. This will be a very STIFF dough.
  4. Spread in cake pan or drop into cupcake liners.
  5. Bake 8-inch cake for 40 minutes. Check pupcakes after 20 minutes.
I used a paw shaped pan for this special treat and left it uniced, but the original recipe recommends spreading low-fat cottage cheese and decorating with carrots. As Chance is a very tiny pup, he doesn't need those extra calories.

Happy Anniversary Chance!

  1. I didn't know you had a blog but just saw the update in my Facebook feed. Very cool! :) And your doggie treat sounds good enough for a human to eat.

  2. Thanks! We had a tiny piece to celebrate with him. I had mine with cinnamon cream cheese frosting I had leftover from Spice Cupcakes. It wasn't terrible, but I wouldn't recommend trying the recipe unless you have a pet. lol Chance, on the other hand, loved it!

Be Here

I read a book recently that reminded me if we are always waiting for the next good thing -- a "better" house, a "better" job, a "better" location, a "better" spouse, the next vacation, your child's next developmental milestone -- you are never fully in the moment and, therefore, you never fully appreciate what you have. We live in a society that teaches us that bigger is better, surplus is superior to enough, wants are more important than our needs, and the next step will make us happier than where we are. But what happens when you reach that next step? Is all that glitters gold? Does chasing happiness bring us joy? Or does reaching that next step leave us in search of the next best thing? The next hit? The next high? What would life look like, then, if we put our focus on where we are? If we chose joy in any and all circumstances? I'm not saying that we should not have goals to improve ourselves or that we do not deserve to be happy. W...

Chasing Perfect

With the new year right around the corner, you are undoubtedly about to face a flurry of New Year's resolutions plastered across your social media feeds. You may even be scribbling your own goals and resolutions in your daily journal, or sharing them with a loved one for accountability. Goals are great. I think we should all set goals and regularly reassess them and measure our progress... but when it comes to setting that New Year's resolution, I have a challenge for you. As the hours turn to minutes, and the seconds tick by on the countdown to our new year and new selves, I want you to ask yourself what it is that you want from 2019. Do you want to be the perfect mom (does that even exist)? The perfect spouse? The perfect disciple? Do you want a perfect body? Maybe you want to find the perfect job or the perfect house or the perfect [enter object here] that will finally make you happy. I have chased the perfect body. I have chased the perfect wife. I am constantly...

A Celebration of Birth

As a way of commemorating the birth of my first son, I shared my birth story publicly on this blog on his first birthday. Birth is something that is not often talked about in polite conversation, and as a newly expecting mother 4 years ago, I had very few friends with kids to talk to (or at least that I felt comfortable talking to about labor and childbirth). I would like to keep that tradition going on the first birthday of my second son so that any expecting mother who comes across this blog will know that not all births are created equal.  But it is the unexpected things you can't plan for that make childbirth amazing.  Here is my story... If each pregnancy is a fruit, my first was an apple and my second was an orange. My first pregnancy was sweet and enticing. Everything was easy. I went day to day blissfully aware of this miracle of life growing inside of me, but I was able to carry on with my regular activities. I was in the gym four or five times a wee...
